Anyone tried one of those before? Aldon amethyst or anything else?

The standard pre '86 ESC ECU was quite sluggish when it came to ignition advance and compared with a standard (long type) XR3i MFI Bosch distributor the XR2's ignition setup was lacking a lot of power on the motorway when going fast in fifth gear.

For keeping the original look on a car but running the RS1600i timing map this might be an option and fitting it into the original ESC casing.

You could use a omex 200 or mega jolt with a gutted dissy. That way you can have what ever advance you need but keep the stock look.

I run ( ran - The car is static ) on my Zetec XR2.

I'll be honest, I love it.
Works great for me.

Only problem is that it uses an EDIS. I believe there is a new version. I don't know if it still uses EDIS or not. I'd hope not by now.
As for using a gutted dizzy? Not sure how effective that would be.
Dizzy has two rotations to the one crank rotation.
Not something you can set up for with Megajolt.
So you'd be looking at an EFI flywheel and the necessary hole in the block, or a CPS and trigger wheel on the crank pulley.

Which one? Omex? Omex doesn't need EDIS as it's got its own ignition driver built in?

Using the original (pre '86) XR2 distributor would work as long as the ECU supports a setup like this. The XR2 ESC ECU also uses the hall signal of the distributor and a built-in map sensor to calculate ignition advance...

I've been reading a few things about the Aldon ECU and seems like some people had major issues with it.

Omex ain't a bargain but who buys cheap buys twice. ;) Car still has got the external CPS setup sold by Burton. but then I won't use a dizzy. I've got a set of RS1600i twin coils lying around. ;)
