Pretty much the Alternator part is a separate loom. It's connection to the main loom being the blue wire mentioned above.
The advantage of not having silly ECU's messing with everything. Connections are more or less direct to the battery via the starter.
Battery Cables and Alternator. I can help you out here. But in the past I've also used MK3 battery cables. They are slightly longer though. And I've made my own Alternator cables too.
The thick to thin wire is possibly the main loom cable. Standard looms have a thin black wire that connects direct to the battery. This is a fuse wire. Often getting replaced with a standard wire. You can test it by checking if it goes directly back to the fuse box and where it connects. IIRC, it's a common rail and connects a number of the fuses together.
