Hi chaps,

Looking to build a very torquey N/A motor that (ideally) I can build from raiding the Ford parts bin, i.e. no significant machining or many specialised parts. It has to be an inexpensive undertaking as the car it's intended for was £500

So, it's to go in a RWD kit car, which is currently running a 1.8 CVH from a Sierra. As I understand it, these are virtually untunable, unless you fit the XR2 head, which requires Zetec pistons, etc. By which time you might as well fit a Zetec bottom end. But, in the interests of low down torque (it's for an Autotest car) it needs to stay eight valve. Really don't want to have to rev it to get it going.

As I can see it, my best / cheapest / easiest option is to mate an XR2 head with a 1.8 Zetec silvertop bottom end. Has anyone ever done this? Which XR2 head would I need, and what head work to keep all the torque down at low revs? I guess use the 1.8 CVH sump, but what to use in terms of pulleys, ignition etc?

Any thoughts? Should I stick with the Sierra boat anchor and just use more right boot?

Cheers

The Sierra cvh lump is basically crap.
The head design is not made for power.
That's why the old conversion of 1.8 sierra block and xr2 head was the way to go.
Now with the zetec being available so easily. This conversion is pretty much consigned to the history books.
Especially as sierra 1.8 lumps are so hard to find.

The zvh however is worth a look due to the Greater torque you already mentioned.

There are better sites than this which provide all the zvh info you need.
How to drill for the cvh water pump and belt tensioner and head modifications etc..
Google is your friend here.

Sump is entirely related to the application to which the engine is being mounted.
Personally I'd look at details for fitting a zetec to your rwd car and go from there.
At the very least, chances are you can sell your sierra cvh lump and use the money from that to buy a specialist sump or if you can use the zetec sump, use the money to pay for the engine work needed.
Either way. Sell the Sierra lump. They make good money. Especially with the sump attached. You WILL be asked to sell the sump separately. I don't recommend it as you'll have more issues selling the engine then.

Hope that helps.

Jason.

Thanks Jason,

I've got a spare sump sitting. Can't believe the bits from these old boat-anchors actually fetch money. I think the stock car guys have something to do with it, as well as the RWD Zetec crowd.

I will consult Google in more detail - already found good info on the Quantums site (I'm amazed it's still up there!) but thought someone on here might have built something and could have something to add.

Cheers

Iirc, Mark ( Bomber ) has a ZVH. His is turbo though.
There is a site that has info specific to the N/A ZVH. This has info on the blacktop lump.

Pretty sure it is the first or second hit on Google as I recall. So easy to find.

Yes, the Sierra cvh lumps still make good money.
Kit car builders still use them as a first lump along with those who still run classic Sierras actually AS Sierras!
Guy I know had a Sierra he broke for a kit car project. He sold the cvh lump complete with the engine mounts for £400!!!
More then he paid for the car. ( He had it sat for a while.... ) but still!

If I could sell my engine for £400 I'd literally pee myself with joy.

None of the sites seem to state which XR2 head is the one to use, though. I think you're looking for a high compression ratio of about 11:1 - I understand the head choice will impact how much machining is required.

Any ideas?

I have used the lean burn head with the Escort GTi block. I calculated the CR and the target CR. I skimmed 1.5mm off to get what I was after. My brother has recently done the same engine and he took 1.8mm off to get the same CR. If you went with the hemi-head I think you need a bit more off, again working it out will be the best bet, IIRC 2mm.

I use the Kent CVH22 cam with a vernier (you will need a vernier) with no issues in 10K miles. Did the conversion in 2009. Love it. Next year it will be back on the road and with the 4 branch manifold to complete it. I will get it on the rolling road again to see what gains have been made with just a manifold swap.

HTH

Yip, still here lurking in the shadows. Lots of stuff keeping me busy at home so only come on here once in a while.
Looking to get the XR worked on over the winter so watch for some update stuff.

If I can't find a head locally I might have to get that from you, but the cost of posting an engine on a pallet Kent - Aberdeen might be prohibitive!

Been doing some eBaying. Silvertop bottom ends are actually pretty scarce! Can we use a blacktop for this build?

The build site I mentioned used a blacktop.

Jason.

Hi Andrew,

Thanks for that - that's encouraging!

One more dumb-ass question. It's going onto an MT75 (Granada Scorpio) box. Does the blacktop fit the bolt pattern or do I need to source a silvertop?

Ta!

Yep.
All the same bolt pattern.

Jason.
