It's what the engine builder recommended and worked well so far. Either way oil pressure is built up before the fuel pump is switched on everytime before starting it

Race engine.

So hardly 'standard' install. :)

10w40 or 15w40 as standard.
Maybe start with 10w40. If it smokes at all or leaks, move to 15w40.

Anyone used full synthetic 5w30 oil, like Ford Formula F? Although I know that the Formula F is not a full synthetic oil strictly speaking, but it's sold as one anyway :)
Was wondering if any part of the engine doesn't like it. Longevity of parts or some other issues?

I've used 5w30 for a short period (6000km maybe) in my 1.1 and it ran better then the 10w40 semi-synthetic that I put after it (both were Ford oil). But that's also related to the state of the engine which has seen better days.

I use 5w30 in my zetec.
I did put some in my 1.1 once when I noticed my car was well below the minimum and didn't have any 15w40 in the house.
Engine started to burn oil as it's far too thin for a 1.1.

10w40 is as thin as I'd put in a cvh.

And no. Don't worry. Just so many people have different ideas for what oil is best. Lol.

Interestingly enough, my 1.1 is burning more 10w40 then it did the 5w30 before it. But as I've said, maybe that's related to the health of the engine which is degrading.

If I had a zetec I wouldn't even think about semi-synthetic, but with the cvh I just dont know. I know Ford now recommends 5w30, but dont know what that will do to the engine in the long term. My engine will be rebuilt and (I hope) sometimes driven hard, so dont want any problems.

My owner's manual recommends 10W30.
The current replacement would be 5W30, as 10W30 is hard to find nowadays and 5W30 is the same hot and better when cold.

If it burns too much 5W30, 10W40. If it burns too much 10W40, I'd say rebuild it.

Race engines may benefit from a thicker oil, but that's a different ball of wax (oil thins out with temperature and a race engine will naturally run very hot).

For a road engine you will want the thinnest oil you can get away with. Better fuel consumption and less power loss due to drag.

Don't use fully synthetic in a cvh. These engines wasn't design for it.
And will cause more harm than good.
A fresh build it'll be fine.
But seriously. All my cvh's run the best on 10w/40
Semi.
I had 15w/40 in one the first time I had a cvh
And it sounded like a bag of nails. So changed to 10w/40. And was a lot better.

Chris isn't yours solid lifters ? So you can put anything in that engine and it'll love it lol.

What grade of oil is better for the hydralic lifters?

Chris is rebuilding his engine (as I will be), so I don't know what harm would 5w30 do - or full synthetic oil in other words, which 10w60 also is in most cases.

edit:
I was even thinking 0w40 for street use. Mobil 1 New Life: http://www.mobil1.co.uk/synthetic-engin ... 0w-40.aspx

My opinion.......
I use 10w40 normal oil or fully synth - whatever my budget is at oil change time. Zetec block and lovely quiet lifters. I did use 10w30 but was too thin once warmed up (at Silverstone!) and the tappets got very noisy. I needed a higher last number hence 10/40 now.
Full and part synthetic or mineral makes little difference, it just means one does the job better, for longer and stays stable without breaking down and causing wear. Full synth is better oil full stop and as such flows better at lower temps hence 0w , 5w etc.

Interestingly, my early Haynes shows 10/30 10/40 or 10/50 grade oil.

The bearings are also made from different materials in a fully synthetic engine.
Your not suppose to mix fully and semi.
A car designed for fully can have semi in it.
But not suppose to do it other way round.
Something about how it's made up. Or something. Can't remember offhand.

But 10w/40 semi. Is perfect for a cvh.

As I read your reply I seem to remember that there was something about this, so I have dug out some old info!

I have also checked the info now!

ZDDP content in all oils has been reducing since the introduction of the catalytic converter, something to do with ash build-up destroying the catalyst. Most new manufacture spec oils now contain no ZDDP.

Google ZDDP for your explaination of it's use in older engines as FI3STA brings to light. Well done that man! :cool!:

(and making a mess in the understairs cupboard while I searched this out  )

I think I'll go for 10w40 semi-synthetic, what do you all recommend castrol gtx/castrol magnatec?

When I had my CVH I just used to chuck the Halfords own 10W40 in it even after I fitted a brand new cam and followers. Ran it like this for years IMO expensive oil is wasted on a CVH unless you've spent thousands rebuilding it as a lot will fall out and as long as bits are lubricated it wont go wrong.
