Hi All,

Right, not an XR2 conversion Im afraid, but sure there isnt a great difference.

I bought my other half a nicely restored mk4 escort convertible, it is absolutely mint in metallic blue and looks great. We want to keep it very close to original (it has zeetec s alloy on at the mo but thats all) its almost a classic car really.
But its just too slow! We can do some work on the standard engine and push the power up pretty high, but that will cost loads to do what i got in mind and just isnt worth it.

So, we are thinking about puting the turbo lump in and doing the turbo brakes too.

So any of you guys got any advice/help or an idea of prices that may help me out?

I know nothing about the escort turbos, but I guess it was 1.6 and the updated version (90 onwards?) a 1.9 - is that right? and how much power do each put out? and did they do power steering on the escort turbo, as I'll do that too if i can.

Just want some ideas for now, so any help much appreciated.

Ph1l

mate it is easy to do a full turbo conversion on that car because its literally the same car, the best advice id give to u is buy a rs turbo that either a mot failiure or smashd one from the back, it is so easy to convert over u would only need to get an engine hoist from a hire shop...

any more help give us a shout

All the RST's were 1.6 and the 1.9 were produced by tuning companies ie Power Engineering etc. Power wise the 1.6 in standard form produced 132 bhp and I think a 1.9 would produce ~170 bhp ish obviously depending on what spec it was (CFosters was about 220 bhp I think) as for the power steering I wouldn't bother if I was going for power as you will loose some bhp through PS but I am sure you could modify a PS sytem to work on this car.

As ulitmate sleeper says your best bet is to get a back end smash / MOT failure RST and swap all the bits over when you have them side by side.

All 1.6's as above mate.....

If you dont want to splash out on a donor car, you will be able to buy a complete engine for about £300 (with g.box), buy a loom for a nifty, depending if your cabby is fuel injected youl need a petrol tank, a few ancilleries, exhaust and ya done.. Allow £500 tops if your gonna do it yourself.. Done loads of cabriolet conversions and you wont have a problem....

is the car efi or mfi ???, if its a 90 spec, id be inclinded to think it could be a efi, as the 90 sepc xr3i's were efi

in either case, youd be best off sticking to the origninal form of injection- nice and easy to do that way with minimal re-wiring ;)

Thanks for your help guys, i was thinking it should be a stright swap.

Its an 86 mfi cab, one of the first of the mk4's its got a factory fitted rs kit on it, but no bonnett vents and we dont want to put those on, we want to keep it looking as it does now - i'll get some pics it really is a one off! 40k miles with full history!!

I'll have a look around at breakers and see what they got, I dont want a standard one though, I dont think 130 is really enough to make it worthwhile, thinking more like 150.

Are they very easy to modify to that sort of power? i guess they must be as so many people do it, but never having had one I'm clueless!

I guess if they are pretty much the same car the brake bits all mount in the same place, right?

Thanks for your help guys.

Phil

yup, everything is interchangable brakes wise.....

As for power, go for a chip, or just uprate the intercooler and up the boost....

Sounds simple enough!
Any suggestions for cheap insurance companies for a car like this?

I'll go have a look round the breakers at canvey at the weekend and see what they got lying around, I reckon I'll try get the whole car and take the bits off it I want if I can get one at a reasonable price.

I got a quote on insurance with HIC, they said £868 for a classic policy and its no extra to put in a turbo lump.

Insurance is up for renewal in December so will probably do the conversion early 2004.
I also know of a guy whos selling his space racing engine with 152bhp which might be cool too - thats the sort of power we want.

Thanks for your help, sure I will need more when i come to doing it!!

152 is pretty good for a 1.6 cvh non turbo, most racing classes are restricted in some way anyway so your limited on the work you can do.

152Bhp for a 1.6 CVH Naturaly Aspirated is VERY respectable, but I think he thought you were talking Turbo. In which case, 152Bhp is a 20bhp over the factory setup.
