Hi more Questions, im in the middle of building my Zetec turbo engine. spec is Lighted & Balanced, Steel rods Low comp forged pistons, (blacktop ) Ported & polished head matched Rover turbo inlet, uprated valves and retainers, std cams. Question is what turbo/boost level is best to run im aiming for 320 to 350 bhp maybe more, but rev well to 7250 to 7500 rpm. will my ib5 box work ok, not planing on doing 0-60 times just fast road and some track sessions.

You really need to get it mapped by someone with the right tools and knowledge to be safe and get the most out of it, which will include setting boost pressure as one part of the whole process. Speak to someone about what injectors to use for your spec and once its done have it mapped.

What management are you using?

IB5 box will be OK, but people say its not as strong as a BC.

Ib5 is stronger than bc, but over 250 horses and they start to fall quickly, 300bhp plus and it's far worse.
Forget 350 bhp unless you spend on a cts stage 2+ at a minimum.
As for boost, depends on turbo, injectors, cr etc.
2 bar through a gt30 will see over 420bhp

P.s. Revs kill zetec oil pumps, i ran mine on a 7400rpm limit on a forged and cammed zt.
Many zt's die from oil pump failure.

theres a few zts over 300 running standard boxes and countless runs at pod. Cts boxes aint worth spending out on from what ive heard

Thanks for the info Guys, iv been looking at a gt25 or gt28 turbo, and im not a fan of ragging my car up and down pod its more track days fast road. so i have a s1 box and s2 box a rs1800i box with lsd bc and a escort gti box with LSD thats a ib5 box i belive?? is their a better bearing to fit , and what would be best internals to fit to the ib5 box, if interchangeable.

for 340bhp i was suggested to use a gt2860rs, will be low lag and enough grunt up the top end.
as for saying a box is good as it's done pod launches, is like saying my wife is good at head because she hasn't bitten the end off yet....
of the "standard" boxes being lsd or non lsd i would bet the cash in my pocket that they wouldn't survive a few laps of silverstone on full chat up and down the gears, it's how they get treated as to how long they last. i had an s2 box last many years at 200bhp, an s1 box that didn't mind circa 300bhp too much either.
the ib5 has a bigger bearing for the main shaft i believe which is where the big bearing kit comes from in regards to s1 boxes as they are smaller, all that is required is the casing machining out to fit the bigger bearing. cts do have a lot of experience and do more than just fit the ib5 bearing kit, they have tweaks to the oil return through the fifth gear end too, but sod blowing over a grand on a ticking time bomb.

alright big un you know what i was getting at

I think the stress and shock of over 300 horses going into a standard s2 box etc is a hell of a lot more to handle than a few gear changes a lap. f*ck spending a fortune on a cts is the moral

it's not the gears that die typically, tends to be the bearings.
the input shaft is quite small on the bc and ib5 boxes therefore it can twist a bit causing the failures.
this is the reason i went with an mtx75 from the focus rs, cracking box, very smooth gear shifting and a great diff as standard. The cost is around £1400 plus choice of speedo, so definitely not a cheap upgrade, it can be done much cheaper, but if you're going to bother, do it right.
an IB5 will probably do you alright though, all depends on the power and torque more importantly that you end up with.
The IB5 has more webbing in the casing than a bc too, so less case flex, think what you will of that...
i'd like to have done a 6 speed getrag though, smaller box than an mtx75, used on higher powered car as standard too, supposedly a better fit.
