Anyone know off the top of their head if the box in this will be -

mtx75 for a start?
cable or rod shift?
mechanical speedo drive?
and what uprated clutch will fit in it? FRS?

It's not too far from me so will go for a look if no one knows, but someone might be able to save me a wasted trip! :cool!:

You want a Escort MkV RS2000 2WD box.

They are the shortest of all the MTXs (probably about 3/4" shorter) and can have a Quaiffe fitted. They are cable clutch and Rod operated. But can be converted to a Hydraulic clutch easily with a Wilwood slave.

They also retain the starter at the front too.

Will this be a rear starter box?
Is rear starter a problem? Is it not just a case of altering the wiring or is it more involved than that?

Have you converted to silvertop sump? If you have rear start you can go back to a blacktop sump which is a better sump anyway. Plus you'll never have hot start issues

mondeo box can be used, best to go tdci though as the ratios are better, the rs2k 2wd box is physically smaller but you can't use a frs clutch which is what you need really to handle the torque, although you can get a rs2k centre padldle although more hassle with the setup not being off the shelf.
cable clutch is crap, change over to hydraulic to save yourself aching feet when changing gears and launching, not expensive if you do a bit of home engineering and retro fit a focus master cylinder through bulkhead.

rear starter is a great advantage if you ever fit a bigger turbo it gives a little extra room for a bigger down pipe/hoses.
speedo on mtx apart from rs2k are electronic drive, so change speedo.

although the frs conversion is expensive it's a fit and forget solution, no clunky sloppy selector, accurate speedo to 0.5mph at 100mph (with stack speedo), yes it does hang a little low but i never hit anything on mine. also you can run a frs/2.0 flywheel and a full frs paddle clutch which are nice and light on the pedal and grip very well.

A Sachs Racing clutch is used on a RS2000 box. The AP won't fit without spacing the box or grinding the inner casting. The Sachs clutch is rated to 500bhp.

sachs clutch costs about the same as an ap IIRC, horses for courses though, i just don't see the appeal of an rs2k box.
apart from being a tad smaller, the selector with rod changer isn't the best, cable clutches are cumbersome and cable drive speedo won't read right anyway and needs calibrating.

have a chat with dean aka qplaterst and see what he is running, he is currently the only mtx75 running mk2 fiesta around, so any info will be current.

He runs an RS2000 box with a Quaife Diff and AP clutch spaced off the block.

You can use rs2k box or xr3i 16v 130ps.
Was easy to sort the rods out.i used a xr3i 16v flywheel then contacted helix who made me a xr3i 16v paddle clutch. No more expensive than any other paddle clutch.

mine didn't sit any lower than the cradle, just less protection if bumped, which never happened anyway.
they are designed with the engine cantered forwards which is why if the engine is sat level they hang a tad lower, something crazy cage - gary has adopted with his mk3 fiesta zetec turbo in his new build to reduce oil starvation (along with dry sump) and give better ground clearance.
if you change to cable shifter and hydraulic clutch you wouldn't go back to rod changer that's for sure, it really makes that much difference IMO.

No worries mate, any pics are welcomed! Will help me whilst carrying out the conversion.
Received my clutch and flywheel today! Just waiting on the rest of the gear!

Don't forget to budget for a decent speedo that accepts a digital input if you're going FRS box.

Racetech do a digi speedo & rev counter that are the same design as my other gauges so I'll prob upgrade to them when funds allow!
Not cheap tho!

Fitted new clutch, flywheel and slave cylinder today and got the starter motor fitted.
Offered up the two piece shaft from the mk1 FRS and the bracket for the shaft bearing must bolt onto the sump of the blacktop?, I'm using a silvertop block so there isn't anywhere to mount it on my sump.
Has anyone else done this conversion on a silvertop so I can see how they have dealt with this?
It looks like I'll have to fabricate a bracket that mounts to the block to sort it out.

They also came in Mk1 Focus IIRC. The bracket bolts to the Silvertop block, whereas the later ones bolt to the Blacktop sump and will have a different bracket.

Yeah i've got the blacktop set up here which isn't any use to me.
Looks like I may have to move my sump breather take off with the mtx shafts but wont know until I get the correct ones. Could be sump off again to have it welded
