If you press the back of the seat about an inch below the headrest directly underneath the headrest posts that releases the headrests and they just lift out.

I presume you mean the actual part that the headrest slots into in the seat itself?

If so, it's an integral part of the seat and you will need to cut it out.

Craig ( where's he? ) has done this mod before..
Actualy Craig.. Where are you?

Jason.

Heres the best shot of my rear headrest conversion I can find in my tasman blue Xr2.

Image

Im using Escort S2 recaros in the front, with the back seat retrimmed to match. So I got another pair of front Escort S2 Headrest, and with carpeted tubes secured to the back of the back seat. The headrest slide into these, and are held in place.

Rob.

cheers for the pics and replies chaps!

are the recaro head rests and xr2 ones the same size? (distance between each post)

might retrim the rear seat one day to match the fronts and use a set of recaro head rests aswell. but will still do the conversion to the xr2 ones.

and will do it properly by drilling etc and using proper holders hopefuly should look good.

cheers lew

I wouldnt bother. Good for show but crap for driving.
The first thing I do when I get a hire car is remove the rear headrests and lob them in the boot.
f*cking things..

there no use anyway, i've never felt the need to support my head on a rest, even in accidents they've been no use.

That's because most people don't use them propperly.
I'll admit, I don't use mine either though.

Jason.

From my Ghia thread:

Image
First step, obtain a spare backrest and strip off the fabric. If grubby, you could bung the cloth trim in the washing machine :D

Image
While drying, fit the metal backings ^^^

Image
with the top sections cut from a scrap pair of front seats ^^^

Image
which need a fair bit of meat chopping out to clear the bracing on the metal seatbacks.

Image
Just about enough excess material has been removed here

Image
while the bracing itself needs a little modification

Image
The adapted front seat section doesn't have to look particularly pretty, and can now be attached to the seatback

Image
preferably by welding, but rivets are ok as long as you use enough decent size ones.

Image
The foam section needs a little bit of alteration to accommodate the extra steel

Image
For a 60/40 split seat, you need to take a bit more off the headrest mount on the smaller side

Image
After stretching the trim back on, the plastic headrest pole guides need to be re-inserted after carefully cutting holes for them

Image
If done with enough time and care, the end result is a rear seat that looks like the headrests have always been there.

PS. Jason. Busy like you just wouldn't believe.

Sorry for the thread bump. If anybody still wants to do this, I just found two pairs of front seat tops and headrest guides, as well as a pair of headrests from very early mk2 XR2. (square shape)

And. Spare complete rear seat for the same. Dark fabric.

All now up for grabs!
