Getting ready to refit my engine and gearbox so looking at getting new inner CV joints. However, they are different each side of the gearbox, so just trying to find out if this is normal or just another of the mismatched parts situations previous owners have left the car with.

1600CVH engine with 5 speed box. RH inner CV joint for big shaft has three bearings on a 'spider'. LH inner CV joint has 6 ball bearings in a cage. RH CV joint body sticks out about 75mm from gearbox, while LH only sticks out about 63mm.

Is that typical Mk2 XR2?

I think it would have been ball bearing originally ,they usually have a part number date that might help stamped under the boot, something like 81tt :cool!:

Thanks.

Have now had chance to check the driveshafts. LH shaft ends are smaller diameter than RH shaft ends.

There was originally a Mk1 hub and outer CV joint on LH side, so I'm guessing that driveshaft and inner CV joint are probably Mk1 too.

Mk1 xr2 driveshafts won't fit a mk2 xr2 , passenger side is too short , drivers is 2 piece and uses a steady bearing and no inner cv like a mk2 on either though the outer cv's will swap over as the spline count is the same and you can fit a mk2 xr2 drivers shaft a mk1 xr2.

Thanks for the info. Been doing a bit more research, and looks like the LH shaft with the smaller splines is off a small engined model rather than XR2.

Oh the joys of rebuilding a car that's been cobbled together by a clueless arsehole!
