A budget zetec turbo will always work out cheaper and easier to get the power out of it.

CVH was the predecessor to the Zetec, nowadays you're starting off with old technology if you go down that route, 16v's the way forward.

If I was going to go turbo.
I would go zetec or duratec. Probably duratec as it's a newer engine.

Cvh is around 30 years old at it's youngest.
S2 zetec is around 20 years old at it's youngest .... Etc...

Nothing wrong at all with a CVH. Go for a FRST Efi lump and you can run it off MS or Omex.

Budget for a freshen up of the engine and you'll see 180/200bhp no problem.

All the quickest mk2's back in the day ran ERST and FRST conversions. The cvh is quite capable of giving you that power. Plus it bolts straight in. Ideal.

My old ERST had 180 with just a bleed valve fitted so capable of making good power without breaking the bank

I wasn't saying the CVH was bad.
Just thst it's old.
Old usually means either worn out or commands a higher price.
Or both!

You may get more power at a cheaper cost going a zetec type route.

I should imagine anything you buy to put in is going to be rebuilt anyway... so costs are negligible, cvh probably cheaper to rebuild than a zetec.

If I had a Mk2 now, Id be bunging in a FRST setup. An FRST setup in a 1.4S would be nice, and even standard power is going to give most new hot hatches a good go I reckon. In Tasman Blue... please.

Cheap zt everyday. Mines only a basic blacktop zetec and if it goes bang I'll drag another out the scrappys which is better than a rebuild cost of cvhs

I don't rate st170 engines, the st170 was never much quicker than a normal 2.0 Focus. A mate of mine had a ST170 Focus, that was no quicker than my XR4x4 2.9, which is only rated at 150bhp. Fiesta ST engines (2.0) seem to go quite well, but its a smaller car than a Focus.

I'm with CVH, they feel gutsier than the 16v units anyway, nice big valves plenty of grunt.

Owain is bang on. It all comes down to what type of power delivery you want from your engine.
