Hi all,

I've got a fair sized dent in the front lower panel of my mk2... not to mention it needs considerable welding in the engine bay (usual places) so i figured a removal and replacement is worth while.

I've never removal a car panel in my life, i've cut rust out if the arches and sills a bit before but nothing major. So I wondered if there was a guide or any advise on how to do this?

I've read up the basics of drilling out the existing spot welds, however information on what to do next runs dry. It may seem pretty obvious to most but I would really appreciate some advise, and this goes for refitting the panel too.

Thanks
Mark

Drill the spot welds out with a spot weld drill. Locating them can be tricky sometimes, especially if the panel is not original. You can usually get it started at one end then chisel off the panel till you hit a spot weld, grind or drill that then chisel off, repeat until the panel is free from the crossmember/inner wings. On my Mk1 I completely butchered it to remove it, cut pieces off that weren't spot welded to make it easier for myself.

If you're just removing the front panel and keeping the wings then you may struggle to separate the two. If you need welding in the engine bay chances are the wings need to come off anyway.
