Hi

Probably a strange question but how would I know if my fiesta has been converted to unleaded? It's a mk2 B reg and I've got loads of history for it but no mention of hardening the valve seals?

Had it already come in before 1985? Would I notice anything in particular when driving? The engine has done 68k now so would it have already burnt itself up?

Or am I just being silly has it always been unleaded?

Thanks!

B reg is likely a none hardened valve head.

I've asked a few times on here if the later ohv head ( hardened valves ) can replace the earlier one without additional work or compression changes.
I've never had a yes or no answer.

Jason.

How long have you owned the car?

It's low mileage for year, so if you haven't had it long then previous owners could have done low miles per year using a lead replacement additive or found a garage that continued to sell leaded petrol after most had stopped.

If it is suffering from serious valve seat recession then the valve clearances will have closed up - unless of course somebody has backed them off.

It's been in my family for 13 years (I've had it for 6) and we have done about 35 k in that amount of time before that it was looked after annualy by the local ford dealer so assume it must have been done but have never seen any proof and have loads of old work reciptes.

I've always used super unleaded don't know if that helps if it hasnt been converted?

Chances are it's not been done then.
My missus b reg 84 1.1 hasn't been done.
It's on 120k miles. Drives fine.
If it starts to run rough I'll get it converted.

Jason.

I thought it was only the 'lean burn' later CVH engines from about 87 on were unleaded ready from the factory. The early 'hemi' CVH's were all 4 star machines...

Later ohv engines ( 86? ) were definitely unleaded compatible.

They were. Think there was a marking on the cylinder head to indicate this.

I'm not sure.
I'd have to check the haynes.
The ford manuals i have are all for the earlier cars.
