I want to clean up the rusty steel end cover on my 5 speed gearbox.

Will removing it disturb anything inside?

Haynes manual no bloody help at all with this.

As long as the 5th gear is in good condition.....
It should be fine.

If not. The 5th gear will fall off.
But if that happens the box is usually scrap.
There are usually clues to that happening though.

Jason.

5th can be tacked back on worse case. Not ideal given the shaft is hardened already but gives a little more life to an already worn shaft/box ready for rebuild

Pretty sure the internals are fine.

Gearbox is out of car, so if I sit it end up and remove cover I should be OK by the sound of it.

Thanks for the replies chaps.

Yup, about 8 bolts, jobs a good'n. Make sure you've got a new end plate gasket when refitting, and dont overtorque, the bolts easily strip the threads being fairly soft alloy
