Im sure someone breaking a Mk2 could get all the parts together for you in one place, but if you cant do the work yourself, you're right that someone's going to charge a reasonable amount for it. You could maybe speak to someone like Rodney from here and see if he could do it for you, you can get much more of a simple conversion really, there's a few things like the radiator which would ideally be swapped for one from a manual, or blanked off.

Places like chester sportscars also offer a drive-in drive-out zetec conversion if you would prefer to put the money towards a bit more of a modern powerplant.

I entertained the idea of putting a 130bhp 1.8 Zetec silvertop into the last XR2 I owned. Would have been rapid, as the Orion it was in anyway was quick enough. Be sooo much ballache without a donor car id imagine. Wiring would be a nightmare, plus ecu's etc etc.

Everything associated with old fords now is getting costly. CVH's are on the up... an almost throw away item 5 years ago.

The Zetec conversion is one of the most well documented, I didnt have a donor car for either of mine, both 2 litre conversions which are slight more involved than the escort/fiesta version of the 1.8, and one was done on the driveway with all the parts bought at the local scrapyard and kept in the boot whilst the conversion was happening. The wiring is straightforward too with the standard ecu, we've got a whole forum room to help!

Same for me.
I went for an even simpler option of fitting a 1.8 Zetec from an Escort.
So no need to change the sump, pump etc..
I originally ran it on Ford ESC and a Weber 34DMTR with adaptor plates for the inlet and outlet manifolds.
With a facet fuel pump and regulator.
I bought an Escort Mk5 top rad hose and made the bottom hose from silicone parts.
The rest can be adapted from the standard CVH pipes but I replaced mine with silicone as they were past it.

I later upgraded to Megajolt and a Huco fuel pump.

I did all the conversion myself without any help other than pointers on here.
I had it in and running in a day.

I do recommend lifting the engine in from underneath though.
I dropped mine in and it was a 'mare.
Easy to drop a CVH or OHV in from the top, but the Zetec is bigger.

Jason.

All this talk of dropping Zetec's in but how are they on fuel, which was the original question asked, I can understand the need for a more up to date engine and obviously said engine will make the little Fezza fly but is the 2ltr a bit of overkill in such a small car, the other side of the coin is after all the bits have been bought and fitted (not just the engine but brakes etc as well) and the insurance companies have had their fill on a 2ltr conversion, would the money spent on that be better off spent on fuel in the first place on the original engine? (I know it won't be as much fun to drive as a Zetec tho).

Mine is about the same on fuel than the cvh it replaced.
But considering it uses the same setup i was using on the cvh... bar jet changes.. it's to be expected i suppose.

Injection would be far better.
But again. Any efi is going to be better than a carb on economy.

My comment was in response to Owains really, I thought we'd probably got an answer to the economy question by now.

I was planning on doing it 12 years ago gents. When zetec conversions were still a 'fairly recent' thing. although well done.

If I was going to do it now, id go for a silver top 1.8 130ps lump again. For me one of the sweetest zetec engines. However id run it standard, ecu, injection etc etc.

As for economy, my Orion Ghia Si with that 130ps 1.8 zetec used to get around 30mpg, not bad when it was being cained a lot of the time!

It was almost 10 years ago when i did my first conversion myself, they were plentiful in scrap yards back then which made getting the bits in one go very easy. Ben wrote a cracking guide back in 2004 but jim hearnes site predated that by quite a few years. Nowadays I'd use the Duratec badged lump from the ST170, a lot more common and cheap as chips at the moment, and whilst 130bhp in a mk2 shell is reasonable, you're not going to be seeing off anything that's considered reasonably quick nowadays. That extra 40bhp certainly wouldn't go amiss.

I have to agree.

Silvertop lumps command quite a price tag at the moment.
If I was to do it again, I'd go for a 'new' zetec.
As Ross said. One of the Duratec lumps.
Or. If feeling flush. Try an Eco-boost unit.
Prices are starting to fall and complete lumps are now becoming available for less than £1k.

I recon get a crash damaged complete car for around £3k.
Rip out the engine, box, shafts, mounts, gear shifter, loom, clocks and ECU(s?).
Chuck that lot into a MK1/2 Fiesta on Xr2/Eco-boost shafts spliced together and balanced properly.
Throw the swirlpot and pump from the Eco-boot tank into a Fiesta tank.
Mod the dashboard to take the Eco-boost clocks and it *should* just think it's an eco-boost.
Right?

Sell anything not smashed to bits on the donar car back on Ebay to offset the initial cost of the car.
Should be good in a sub 850Kg car!
About as economical as you're going to get without going hybrid or electric.

( Electric Mk2 Fiesta has been done already too! )
