I took my xr2 for it's MOT today.
The day before I did my usual checks before hand.
Lights, wheels, wipers, fluids etc..
All looked good.

Took it to the MOT station and Andy noticed that the rubber was half out of the engine mount!
The washer had even moved behind the metal mount!
Obviously very dangerous!
So obviously failed.

All sorted now thanks to a couple of spanners, a pry bar and the use of a 4 post lift.

Had that failed when driving, I hate to think what could have happened!

So check your engine mounts.
Sadly, I didn't think to take a picture. :(

Jason.

The rubber mount is fine.
It had worked one nut loose and slipped out that side.
I've put it back now and it appears to be OK.
But eek! Scary!

They are nyloc nuts!
And they appear to be in decent condition. Didn't spin off easily. Even with a spanner.

Last time I drove mine it had torn both gearbox mounts in half and snapped the induction pipe tbf it was the nudge I needed to take it off the road and fix the damn thing

I'd been nursing it thru with head gasket failure clutch shot seized brake calipers and couple other issues
Have made and fitted a third gearbox mount now so hopefully will manage a bit more than 7 months to mounts now

Mine has eaten a few gearbox mounts, the engine mounts been fine so far, I did buy a vibratechnics one but the vibration noise was annoying so swapped it out for a new standard one.

Snapped gearbox mounts before.
On both the xr2 and the 1.1

But never had anything happen to the main engine mount.

I have nylocs and threadlock on mine and I have to tighten them and the engine mount every 15 minutes    but mine is all solid mounted lol

I learnt that after watching my gearbox mount roll back down paddock hill in my rear view mirror at brands hatch one time

Read it wrong Jason, thought you meant gearbox mounts ,if the engine mount failed I guess the engine could move forward during gear changes and the alternator pulley mill though the wiring as often happens on mk1's :wall:

The engine would drop at the belt end.
Hitting the drivers inner wing.
Probably the sump hitting the ground too.

Worst case scenario is a complete write off as the inner wing would almost certainly get damaged.
Sump would probably crack and maybe cv's on the shafts break too.
Timing belt would probably jump or snap too.
Timing belt on my zetec is exposed.

I'm just glad that Andy noticed it and that I was able to sort it on the ramps.
Would have been a mare otherwise.

I used the opportunity to tighten the adjustable panhard rod I fitted after rebuilding the boot floor corners and alternator belt at the same time.

I don't think it would drop out? years since I was under an XR2 bonnet but wouldent the front tie bar stop the engine falling out completely?? I remember changing the engine mount on my black XR2, was quite easy

Possibly.
But it's going to hit the inner wing for sure.
With movement of the car and engine, I'm sure it is possible it could find its way past the tie bar.

Either way. It wouldn't be pretty.

You can do some precautions for the rubber. I cleaned it and completely filled with Window glue ( from modern car). That stays elestic but not too soft and prevents the rubber from complete damage. I guess that this material could completely replace the rubber inside the engine mount.

Got this from a friend of mine, who uses his XR2 for racing
