Whats the best and cost effective way to get around 130bhp out of a 1.6 cvh?

Honestly, if moneys a concern then replace it with a Zetec or a turbo version of the cvh.

"trying" to keep it original as best I can but need a little more go go
would like to know the best way to achieve this that others have used before to gain that type of power.

If you can afford it go with a CNC head instead. will get more out of it and allow for better long term tuning posibilites. I don't think the carb will manage that or certainly will be starting to struggle. You will probably need a set of 40's too

cheers for that, the Burton stage 3 head is cnc'd also comes with
• 214N stainless 43.0mm inlet valves
• 214N stainless 37.85mm exhaust valves
• Cast iron valve guides
• Heavy duty single valve springs
• New steel retainers
• New valve cotters
• Stem seals
• Core plug
that should make the most of a kent 22cvh cam?
also any recommendations on the manifold and exhaust system.
pair of 40's
what type of power will that give

Fair enough, didnt mean to sound negative, nice to see someone keeping the original engine, I just meant it's a more expensive route, there's no replacement for displacement and all that.

Price wise Ross is right.
Its cost effective to fit a zetec over the cvh.

But.
130bhp from a "stock" xr2 is sort of possible.

You need a bigger cam than the Kent 22
That is a mild cam.
A weber 34DMTR will deliver up to around 150bhp.
A 4 branch exhaust and a free-er flowing exhaust.
Headwork to aid the flow of inlet and exhaust.
A mapable ignition system will add a few bhp and smooth the power delivery too.

Assuming you buy all the bits second hand minus the headwork.
You are looking at an easy £800 -£1500.

Jason.

Oh.
Adding twin 40 carbs instead of the dmtr won't really add power.
Just noise and fuel.

personal i would like to go the rs turbo route, but the car has been owned from new by my mum and recently was restored from a bare shell to 100% original unfortunately the head gasket has given up so while the head is off may as well improve the breathing.. still want the car driveable .. so maybe just a port and polished head rather than a big valve, cvh 22 cam and exsisting carb 28/32 with a four branch manifold and stainless exshaust , power wise what would that give approx?
as ross said there no replacement for displacement.. i built an e21 323i a few years back (10yrs) with a m30 3.5lrt lump.. that was up to around 260bhp and just pure fun.
The XR2 is part of the family so needs to be kept as close to original

There is one other option that has not been mentioned.

2.0 ZVH.
Running a single DMTR.

To the quick viewer and the unknowing, it'll look factory if installed correctly.
Only us lot would spot it quickly. :)

Should get good power.
But again. With the CVH work I suggested above, should see a respectable 150bhp
The ZVH is supposed to be very torque happy.
I've only ever been in a turbo ZVH and don't know what an NA version drives like.

Failing that.

Leave it alone.
It looks nice in that photo.
Would be a shame to mess with it if it's still factory original.
