I have recently noticed an ineffective brake pedal on my car & upon inspection I found fluid dripping out the back of the servo!? So I think I have a leaking master cylinder.

My questions are:
Can I get a re-build/service kit for the M/C? or do I need a full M/C?
Will the servo be ok?

Its an XR2.

Thanks
Mark

Yes you can get a rebuild kits for them with a bunch of rubber seals in for about £15. Depending on what sort of car you have, a upgrade to a newer servo and master cylinder might be worthwhile (mk2 low spec to mk1/2 mondeo just involves enlarging some bolt holes for example where as XR2 requires modifying bracket angles).

Cheers.
Thought you might say that about using the Mondeo servo. I've had a look for one, but they're not easy to get hold of now. Will look at getting a rebuild kit.

Take the mc apart first.
If the piston or the chamber is scored, then getting a refurb kit is pointless. :(

If it's OK. Make sure all parts are ultra clean and put in the seals using clean brake fluid to lubricate everything. Or again, its a wasted effort.

Jason.

I'll start by getting the old one off & see what condition its in. Then go from there.
Thanks for the info.

Funnily enough I was flicking through my Haynes manual earlier and saw the exploded diagram for the master cylinder. I don't think it's actually that bad, so a rebuild kit might be worth a go. They're pretty cheap IIRC

Yeah. It's not a hugely difficult job.
I rebuilt a Mondeo MC having never done it before without any issues.

Out of interest what is it that stops you being able to combine the fiesta master cylinder with the Mondeo servo?

At the very least, the bolt spacing differs.

But. The Mondeo master cylinder moves more liquid as it has a larger diameter than the xr2 one.

To bring this back up.
I've been struggling to find a re-build kit, even went to a local brake parts specialist. There seems to be loads around for the early version of the m/c, but the later (87, E reg) is near impossible.
Anyone any ideas on a next step to find one.
Thanks Mark

Try biggred.

That's where I bought my Mondeo servo service kit from.

Thanks Jason,
So you think they might have something for an 87 'E' XR2?

I agree everything that Jason has mentioned earlier. If you are going to rebuild then do it properly and not just putting new rubbers. I just did that and a year or two later I found one day with brake failure! I got the new rubber kit from Biggred. I honed the cylinder bore and cleaned thoroughly before putting new seals. It's been OK since.

If you are in any doubt then Biggred will also rebuild your master cylinder.
