Is there anything thats different about these engines when it comes to fitting them into an xr2?

I would like to buy one of these instead of the older one because they tend to have done less miles.

Theres quite a few on ebay at the mo and im thinking of buying a 1.8 from a focus.
Also, would the xr2/rs turbo gearbox bolt onto this engine??

Cheers

you will need the LATE spec escort box because the starter motor is on the rear of the engine

The black tops also have solid tappets, which has gotta be a good thing :D

 Yeah, i know, imagine a mod being unsure whether the engine mounts are different on a blacktop wouldn't be confidence inspiring, neither would asking which head works on a ZVH conversion..

I'm 90% sure the mounts are totally different on the black top, aka the S3 zetec. However, cos ford like to make life easy the holes for the old type mount are still on the back of the bolt ready to bolt an S2 zetec/cvh mount to.

Improvments are a revised cam belt tensioners & rollers and solid tappets aswell as a free-er flowing head? not too sure on that bit actually?. Older type alloy inlet mannifold will bolt straight on allowing use of old type non pats management.

Sump, i can't remember, i *think* you can use the old type one again.

Gearbox, pretty sure it'll bolt up to the XR2 box fine with the right clutch & flywheel thus retaining starter motor on the front of the engine.

I don't profess to know anything about engines... I just understand bigger is better. :blub:

My Mk6 has a black topped engine in it... it says Duratec on it though so I'm assuming that's not the same thing.

but thats only because it uses a ib5 transmission, if you use a bc box [aka xr2, erst] the starter can then go on the front.

Ollie, yours will probably be a zetec se, the all alloy yamaha one.

I did quite alot of research into this when looking into ZT, as parts are available cheap from the US for these where its used in the focus and contour.

The engine is totaly revised from the S2, the block is different and has a outbored water pump which drives anti clockwise (like the 2ltr mondeo s2 zetec) and there is no other pump to replace it (unlike the 2ltr mondeo s2 which is replaced by a 1.8ltr item).

The engine mount is on the side, infront of the cambelt. The alternator is at the back with what looks to be a very similar bolt pattern to the S2 block. Also take note that it has the same bolt pattern on the front for the alternator as all CVH/zetec engines.

The sump is a 2 piece design to aid block flex. The top half is alloy the bottom steel.

The starter motor is at the back as already mentioned and I'm unsure if a BC type box couldnt be fitted due to lack of space? but you could always use a Ib5 box

The auxilary drive belt is the main problem to sort. However it is not imposible as martein has already proved.

The injection system can be swapped for S2 zetec parts with no problems so you can still use ford management without having to worry about PATS.

Thats all I can think of at the mo.

Take a look at this for more info in the ford section obviously
mwstewart's site its very informative.

HTH some people

Why do you want to change the sump ?

There's a cut out in the sump for the exhaust allready. Get yourself a manifold of an focus and you're done.

Starter is on the rear, get an IB5 box with the starter on the rear aswell ;)

or mod the engine slightly to fit one on the front (but mind the space for the exhasut than...

on paper, the starter would be better round the back anyway as it wont get damaged from heat from the exhaust(onturbo'd zetecs anyway.)
