Hello folks,

First off, I know I'm probaly 15 yrs late to the party but there's a a few q's that I need a little help with. Now that I've have my alternator mounted I need to sort the water pump pulley. The engine is a 1.8 silver top out of a Mondeo, the pulley is smooth as it was designed to run on the back side of the ribbed belt. I'm sure I could get a ribbed pulley one to fit of another engine but which one ? Any help would be appreciated.

Cheers

Adder

What he said.

Or.. if you are feeling adventurous and need the space.
You can convert it to the cvh V belt system.
Not done it myself. But it's been done.
Useful for mk1's where space is at a premium.

This is it...
The silvertop is an old engine now!!

Last used in the Escort in 1998!
I don't know if it was used in anything else after that.
But in 98 the Escort changed to the blacktop engine.

Any reason why it has to be ribbed pulley?

I suspect with belt wobble it would either pull itself off,or rip itself to schreads against the block and alternator adjuster.

More likely to slip and squeal too.
Less surface area of the belt on the pulley.

Ah ok cool, I run the smooth one and have done for a few years with no issues.

I thought maybe I'd done something wrong but I guess it's down to personal preference?

I've bought a new one now,

Tried a couple of local scrap yards on Saturday morning with no joy. Must be my age I could'nt be arsed running around

On another note Im aware of the 1.8 and 2.0 water pumps flowing different ways but because mine had this smooth pulley I've got a doubt in my mind. It's a 1.8 out of a Mondeo, if someone could just confirm it will run the right way please :cool!:

Cheers

1.8 2.0 mondeo same pump turns wrong way
1.6 1.8 escort same pump turns right way

Smooth pulley turns anti clock
Ribbed pulley turns clock

My advice has always been ....

Silvertop Zetec..
1.6 or 1.8 get it out of a Fiesta or an Escort.
Otherwise, you'll spend a fortune changing parts like the sump, pickup, water pump, flywheel etc..
Where the Escort / Fiesta engines come with this stuff.

ONLY go Mondeo if you really want the 2.0 or get the 1.6/1.8 mondeo lump free.
