Morning guys,

I've had a quick search and haven't quite found the answer to my question so here goes..

I'm having to extend some of the wiring in the engine bay as most of you probably know when it comes to a Zetec conversion. Can anyone tell me if i can get away with buying a certain amperage of wire to do the whole lot in? Or if anyone can shed some light on the wiring amperage needed for the likes of the fan switch, starter motor from alternator, fan, temperature etc?

Also I am using an escort GTI gearbox which still have the speed sensor attached. How do i bastardise the escort and fiesta speed sensor wiring together or is there a batter approach?

Thanks in advance

Frazer

The original speedo cable will just screw onto the speed sensor. No need to connect the wires if you are using the original clocks.

If you don't need the speed sensor for custom dials.
Unscrew it and sell it.
They sell well, even second hand!
The drive cable will screw straight into the box just like in the Fiesta box.

The rest of the cables...
Alternator / Starter.. I've been told some very silly things with these.. So not sure on that one.
But look at what's used on a Focus or similar for an idea.

Fan carries a fair about of Ampage. IIRC, it's on a 30Amp fuse. So make sure any wiring is above that. 35Amp should be fine.

So i assume i need it if using the standard dials?

I've had a quick look but havent found anything. So I couldn't get away just using a 35Amp wire for all the jobs? I dont want a fire haha!!

You could.
But I wouldn't.

1. It's expensive.
2. It could introduce unnecessary resistance to the temperature sender wire making it read incorrectly.

Instead of creating a new topic, I thought I would just add on to this thread.

Almost complete but just need some clarification on a few more bits.

I have read and assume this one is not needed - is this correct?

What do I need to do with this one?

I have seen this mentioned a few times. Would this go on the sump plug and counter act the one above?
Image

Then there is this plug....have noooo idea where this goes

Thanks in advance!!

Yes to the oil pressure switch.

And the last picture looks like the old distributor plug.

I left mine in the bay, just tucked it away.

Also, with the oil pressure switch, just unscrew the zetec one, and put the one you gonna get in the same hole.

No need to run it in the sump plug.

The oil switch won't work in the sump as there is no pressure in the sump.
The light will stay on constant. Also.. It won't fit in the sump plug hole as the sump plug is an M14 thread and the oil pressure switch is a BSP taper thread who's size eludes me right now.

The oil pressure switch needs to be in an oil galley where the pressure is.

The pipe in the first picture.. I don't know what that is. I'm guessing it's something black top specific.

The second picture. Yes. Just unscrew that sensor and replace it with the one you pictured.
I used the one from my XR2 engine. But even a 1.0 OHV one will work. They are all essentially the same.

Cheers guys.

The first photo is actually a wire with a connector on the end. I thought I got the connector in the photo haha! obviously didn't.

The first photo is the head temperature sensor.

It's not used.

Sorry to bring this back up.. But I am confused to where the temperature sensor will be. A friend said that the head temperature sensor is needed otherwise the gauge won't work. However you guys have said its not needed. Where would I get my temperature reading from in this instance?

Also how bloody hard you I need to pull the fuel tank from the filler pipe!!!

EDIT: I have read that the sensor is in the top of the thermostat. Mine is blocked off :S

You don't use the one in the top of the thermostat. That's for an ECU.
The best way to do it is to use the original fiesta sensor in the front of the thermostat housing.
Near the 19mm hose.

Put a crimp ring around the base of the sensor with a wire on it connected to the engine block.
I connected mine to another crimp connectors ring and put on one of the bolts that holds the thermostat housing on.

Thanks for the photo. Mine looks nothing like that one. Grr! I'll have to look for one with that sensor housing like the photo

Show me your thermostat housing..

I know newer ones don't have the top sensor hole, but in most cases you don't need it.

Earlier thermostat housings have a sensor below the big hose (from rad to stat housing)

And you change that one.

I'm unsure if the later ones have the hole bunged up or its just sealed.

I can check on tomorrow at work.
