Guys,

I have a bit of a puzzeller. Ever since I installed my blacktop zetec (on the road may this year) I have had a horrible grinding/whinning type noise that only happens under load. This in all gears & even when been very gental. No problem when stationary.
I have checked everything I can possibly think of, driveshafts, starter, alternator. Even changed the gearbox as I thought that was the culprit (it was chrunching into 5th so needed changing anyway)
I can't see any signs of alternator fan on front crossmember. This was the obvious choice. The belt is always tight.
The car was fine before I did the change.

Any ideas??
Mark

Did you grind away abit of the blacktop sump?

I had to on my blacktop install as the drive shaft would catch it.

Thanks for the toughts guys.

Jason - If it was either of them, wouldn't the noisy be there when free wheeling (not that I do this mind) As it isn't. Would the wheels bearings be a problem if I've done the hub nuts up too tight?

Gene - Know what you mean, as was concerned about this when I fitted it. How would this change from stationary idle to in gear driving?

OilC - I thought that was what it was, so have taken some more off & I'm pretty sure I'm well away.

The best way to describe the nosie is its as though I've got the alternator belt too long & the fan is catching on the body work. Is very loud & noticable. (Double checked this last night & it isn't)

I dunno.
But thinking logically.

Doesn't do it when the car is sat idling and not moving.
Does it do it all the time the car moves? Low, medium and high speed?
If so. It can't really be engine as it would happen at idle or as the engine moves.
Won't move much at low speed.
So.
Bits that move that aren't engine related.
Gearbox, speedo cable drive, Shafts, CV's, brakes/ discs, hubs, rod ends catching on something, shafts cstching on something, wheels or suspension catching on a wheel.

I can't think of anything else.
:eh:

Did you cut away part of the engine mount platform to clear the pulley when the engine tilts?

Mannion - Will have a look at this, didn't think it was a problem. But will double check.

Jason - Thanks again for getting back to us so quick. See answers in red

Does it do it all the time the car moves? Low, medium and high speed? Not all the time, mainly under accelleration of any kind. Steady speed is ok (at least I can't hear it)

Gearbox, speedo cable drive, Shafts, CV's, brakes/ discs, hubs, rod ends catching on something, shafts cstching on something, wheels or suspension catching on a wheel. I think I'll have to look at all these bits again. But as I hadn't changed any of these I can't understand why it would be as they wheren't a problem pre change.

I can't think of anything else.
