Hi, I have a 1.6 blacktop I will be putting into a MK3.

I know this isnt MK1/2 related but hopefully someone can help.~

Basically the engine is from a MK5 zetec s and I want to convert it to carbs in my MK3 and all I want to know is how difficult is this and what is involved in terms of converting the engine to carbs?

Thanks in advance

Manifold, carbs, ignition system, fees bits of loom made up, burnout.

Haha.

ERM.
Engine mount.

Gearbox mount / bearer work to fit the se gearbox.
Or drill the lump to take a "standard" ford box.

Not sure you can buy an off the shelf manifold option.
DanST sells manifold plates for the se.

Ignition.
Megajolt, nodiz, omex 600 etc....

I'll have a complete megajolt plug and play setup for sale soon.
I just need to make the loom up. It could be made specifically for the se / mk3 if you were interested?
I was going to build it for zetec s mk1/2.

Jason.

So I'd need to get a manifold made up then?

I think I have the mounts sorted or at least I know how they will be sorted.

So if you were to make up the megajolt you'll have for sale for the zetec se I have it should be plug in and play like you say requiring no extra work or tuning from anyone?

How much would you be looking to sell it for?

It'll need tuning.
That's always the case.
You can put a map on that's 'about right'. But to get the best from the car, you need to have the case tuned.
Probably a good idea anyway as you are replacing the inlet to carbs.

Price for my megajolt setup will be about £250.
That will be megajolt, EDIS and loom.
Will just need a hole drilling in the bulkhead and two connection to the standard loom.

Literally just screw the EDIS and megajolt down.
Plug in EDIS, coil pack, CP's and megajolt.
Connect 12v cranking live.
Earth.
Rev counter. This depends on the mk3 it goes into.

You'd need to blank the injector holes as they are drilled in the head would have to check if is small or large injectors as small ones easiest to bung can use steel stick or any epoxy rapid steel large injectors not so simple as holes are nearly 25mm round

OK great thanks guys!

Any idea what carbs would be the best to use? As I understand it, the best are carbs from a 600cc bike?

Also from research it appears the best thing to do is put a bike fuel pump in as well?

Thanks again.

I personally wouldn't bother with a bike pump, it'll give up after a while as they are gravity fed and don't like pulling fuel all the way from the tank to the front.

As I understand it, carb size is dependant on cc size.
So as a 'general' rule of thumb, look at carbs 2.5 / 3 times smaller than the cc engine you intend to fit them to.

So for a 1600cc car engine around 500cc bike carbs.
As 600cc bike carbs usually go on the 1800 zetecs.

We can do you an inlet to suit whatever carbs you buy or can supply the complete package (apologies if you have emailed me already - I know I have had a couple of ebay enquiries on this engine recently).

Fit the bike fuel pump as they do run better with them but don't fit it in the engine bay, fit it close to the tank, behind the flat of the rear seat panel behind the driver is a good place to mount it. Something like ZX6R carbs should do fine as they are a good size for you, are modern and reliable and have a TPS but get a fuel pump off a Yamaha bike, the fuel pumps are all the same on practically every bike, all made by Mitsibushi but the Yamahas have a nice rubber housing that helps with insulation and makes it easier to mount them to the car, other bikes have a huge metal crocodile clip type setup that's nowhere near as good for fitting to the car.

OK thanks, I have read most places that say bike pumps are better and that not using one means you have to get a pressure regulator as carbs only need 3psi of pressure. I'll have a look at the bike pump thanks.

The bike pump is ideal, no need for a regulator it gives you your 3 Psi and is an interrupter pump so cuts in and out as required.

Awesome cheers for the advice, looking to do it on a budget anyway so a cheap second hand pump will be ideal

Is this really worth doing?

If you are happy with the trade off losing smoothness and fuel economy it free's up a lot more power, a 130 spec zetec can go to 148+ purely by binning the injection and fitting carbs alone.

We are talking about a Zetec SE?

True, if you have all the injection gear to swap over then it's probably worth doing this, if you just have a bare engine you need to get running carbs are one of the cheaper and easier fitting options.

"Is it really worth doing?" In my opinion yes! I know I could go foruch more power from a bigger engine and there are easier swaps but that's more expensive as I already have the engine and its all been done before. As far as I'm aware I've seen ony one person do this swap before and they kept it fuel injected.

Yes it's the 1.6 blacktop zetec se engine from a phase 2 fiesta zetec s.

Pardon me asking but what is a 130 spec zetec? Any idea what I might expect from my engine on carbs?

130spec zetec is the 1.8 silvertop zetec s unit.
Fitted to the 16v xr2i and an escort of some description.
From factory on injection, makes 130ps.
On carb(s) usually around 140 on a good setup.

I'm no expert, but I suspect the 1.6se would make 100-130.
Someone will have put carbs on this engine already. Guaranteed.
Not necessarily in a fiesta. But it has been done. I'm sure I've seen one in a kit car.

So someone will know.

Jason.

Ah I see thanks.

Yeah it's a popular kit car engine apparently so without a doubt been carb'd. Like I said seen one in a mk3 but on fuel injection.

Thanks for the help though

Ive often wondered if this is worth doing as I have a mk5 zetec s myself. Ive thought about using some gsxr600 itb's I've got lying around and leaving it on the standard ECU with a map to suit as this was the plan when I had my 306 gti6 as it was tried and tested

Can someone help me? I've decided I will probably not go with the hydraulic clutch of the zetec se engine but will a normal mk3 gearbox go onto my 1.6 zetec se black top or if not what gearbox will? Thanks in advance.
